OTHER CRAFTS
Nangas (healers) practicing juju fill the hand painted gourds with nataka seeds, shake, pour them onto a surface and do a sort of fortune telling. Nangas also keep their potions in such bottles. A dab of "snake oil" will assure that everybody looks at you benevolently and protects you from evil doers! A rolled tag tied to each gourd tells the story in more detail. Brides are expected to be virgins and on their wedding night the mother will give a beautifully beaded gourd full of a lubricating oil. A tag tied to each bottle tells the story in more detail.
The quilted story hangings are made by woman living in their native village, remote from urban society. They use small pieces of fabric and sometimes incorporate natural elements such as twigs. They describe the scenes by writing on scraps of paper which they fold and tuck into the quilt. There are 2 and 3 panel quilts as well as some larger ones. There are fabric loops for hanging. Each panel is about 9 1/2 inches square.
